Description
The Pongam Tree, or Indian Beech, is a majestic evergreen or semi-deciduous tree native to tropical and subtropical regions of Asia. It features a dense, spreading canopy of glossy, pinnate leaves that offer ample shade, making it a popular choice for streetscapes, gardens, and agroforestry systems. During late spring and early summer, the tree produces clusters of pale pink, lavender, or white pea-shaped flowers that attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies, adding to its ecological value. Its flattened, brown seed pods contain oil-rich seeds that are highly valued for biodiesel production, earning the tree recognition as a sustainable energy source. Known for its resilience, Pongamia pinnata thrives in poor soils, including saline and waterlogged areas, making it an ideal choice for reforestation, erosion control, and coastal protection. Additionally, the tree’s nitrogen-fixing properties enhance soil fertility, supporting sustainable agriculture.
Sowing Advice
Scarify seeds by soaking them in warm water for 24 hours to soften the seed coat. Sow seeds 2–3 cm deep in well-draining soil, maintaining consistent moisture. Place the trays or pots in a warm location with temperatures between 20–30°C (68–86°F). Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days. Transplant seedlings into the field or larger pots once they reach 15–20 cm in height, spacing them 5–8 meters apart to allow for mature growth.
