Calliandra Calothyrsus

Description
Calliandra calothyrsus, commonly known as Red Calliandra or Powderpuff, is a fast-growing, thornless shrub or small tree native to the humid and sub-humid regions of Central America and Mexico. It typically reaches heights of 4–6 meters but can attain up to 12 meters under optimal conditions. The plant features a dense canopy with bipinnate, feathery leaves that fold together at night. Its most striking characteristic is the profusion of bright red, powderpuff-like flowers composed of numerous long stamens, which attract pollinators such as bees and hummingbirds. Thriving in full sun to partial shade and adaptable to various soil types, Calliandra calothyrsus is drought-tolerant once established and can improve soil fertility through nitrogen fixation. It is commonly used in agroforestry systems for fodder, firewood, and erosion control. Additionally, its ornamental appeal makes it suitable for use as a hedge or in landscape plantings.
Sowing Advice
To enhance germination, scarify the seeds by soaking them in cold water for 48 hours. Sow the seeds at a depth of 1–3 cm in a well-draining soil mix. Maintain consistent moisture and a temperature of 20–25°C (68–77°F). Germination typically occurs within 1–2 weeks. Once seedlings are 20–50 cm tall, transplant them into individual pots or directly into the field, spacing plants 2–3 meters apart to accommodate their mature size. Regular weeding during the first year promotes healthy establishment.
