Ricinus Zanzibarensis
In stock
Description
Ricinus communis 'Zanzibarensis', commonly known as Zanzibar Castor Bean, is a towering ornamental plant that adds bold, tropical flair to any garden. Renowned for its massive size, this cultivar can reach heights of up to 15 feet in a single growing season, making it an excellent choice for dramatic focal points or screening. Its huge, deeply lobed, palmate leaves are green with a slight bronze tint, creating a lush, jungle-like effect. Bright red seed pods emerge in mid to late summer, providing additional visual interest. This fast-growing plant thrives in full sun and well-drained, fertile soils, making it ideal for large garden spaces or tropical-themed landscapes. Despite its impressive aesthetics, gardeners should note that all parts of the plant, especially the seeds, are highly toxic if ingested.
Sowing Advice
Sow Ricinus communis 'Zanzibarensis' seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost date. To improve germination, nick the hard seed coat with sandpaper or a file, and soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours. Sow seeds 1–2 cm (0.5–1 inch) deep in seed-starting mix and maintain a temperature of 20–25°C (68–77°F). Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid overwatering. Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days. Transplant seedlings into larger pots as they grow, and harden them off before planting outdoors. Space plants 90–120 cm apart in a sunny, sheltered location.
