Description

Fresh seed is very rarely offered! One of the new healthy foods sought after, it is especially loved by vegetarians who substitute this for meat. The ripe jackfruit is naturally sweet, with subtle flavourings and can be used to make a variety of dishes, including custards, cakes, or mixed with shaved ice. The seeds from ripe fruits are also edible, and are said to taste like Brazil nuts. When roasted, the flavour of the seeds is comparable to chestnuts. and they are often used as snacks or to make desserts. A native of south-east Asia jackfruit is now found across the tropics where its versatility makes it an essential fruit crop. They are also quite commonly used in curry in India traditional lentil and vegetable mix curry.

Sowing Advice

These large seeds have already been thoroughly cleaned and should be sown into a well-drained, sandy compost at any time of the year, and covered thinly with sand or gritty compost and kept moist. If possible keep at between 22-28 degrees C. Keep seeds moist but not too wet or they may rot. Seeds may germinate within 4 to 6 weeks, although some may take very much longer so please be patient. Plant out in the open ground in warmer countries or in a large container elsewhere.
