Description

Unique, and very very hard to find, Strasberries really are a unique type of strawberry that look and taste exactly like a cross between a strawberry and raspberry. They even have seed dimples reaching deep into the berry, giving them a bumpy raspberry-like appearance. You cannot in fact cross-breed strawberries and raspberries as they are not closely enough related. However, many years ago, German plant breeder Otto Schindler did years of laborious work by selectively crossing and selecting strawberries over numerous generations to intensify the unique raspberry flavour compounds. Finally, the taste, and even the appearance, was exactly in between the two fruits, and he had finally produced this unique raspberry-flavoured strawberry. All by good old fashioned breeding.... and NOT GMO! Seedlings may produce even more different flavours! These incredible fruits had been effectively lost for many years until discovered again relatively recently!

Sowing Advice

Seeds can be sown at any time of the year into a sandy, gritty, loamy compost (NOT one based on pure peat) and covered with sand or grit. No artificial heat is needed. The seed tray is best left in a cool spot and kept moist. Seeds generally germinate very, very slowly indeed, but usually appear in the spring whenever they are sown, although odd ones may come up at any time. Grow small plants on before planting out.
